Build a payslip checker that runs in one HTML file and never uploads your pay

Nearly six million people overpaid income tax in 2023/24, mostly because of wrong tax codes nobody spotted. Payslips are full of cryptic codes like 1257L, W1 and 0T, and nobody wants to paste their salary into a random website. Build a checker that explains every line and flags anything odd, entirely on your own device.

A solution must include

  1. Single self-contained HTML file under 150KB
  2. Zero network requests after the page loads
  3. Explains tax code, PAYE, NI, pension and student loan lines in plain English
  4. Recalculates expected PAYE and NI for the current UK tax year and flags differences over £5
  5. Flags emergency codes (W1, M1, X, 0T, BR) with what to do next and a link to HMRC

How it’s verified: Live URL plus the downloadable HTML file; Screen recording with the network tab open showing zero requests; Three worked test payslips with expected results.
