The IFS estimates that only around 20 to 25% of Plan 2 borrowers will clear their loan before it is written off after 30 years. For many people, overpaying just hands over money for nothing, yet the question comes up constantly. Build an honest calculator that shows the likely outcome for every plan.

A solution must include

  1. Supports Plans 1, 2, 4, 5 and Postgraduate, with current thresholds and interest rules
  2. Projects total repaid with and without overpayments, with adjustable salary growth
  3. Clearly shows the write-off date and how much is likely to be written off
  4. Assumptions and sources shown (GOV.UK, Student Loans Company)
  5. Runs entirely in the browser, no account
